In Lords of Dogtown, the main characters are not only skaters, but they are also surfers (skateboarding was, at first, tied to the culture of surfing, and in this movie, they began as surfers and later on discovered skateboarding).

Skaters are (often considered as) dirty, rebellious and reckless and all these are evident in the movie in that they would vandalize things, intrude into people of their neighborhood's backyards that had pools that were empty for them to skate in. They skate on the roads despite heavy traffic, tailgating big vehicles like busses by holding onto the back bumper. They wear baggy clothes, typically, long sleeve t-shirt inside inside a plaid button-up shirt (this is usually not buttoned up). Or long sleeve t-shirts with a short sleeve t-shirt worn outside/over it. These are often paired with baggy jeans. As far as shoes are concerned, they wear skate shoes by Vans. In terms of hairstyle, messy/uncombed/unbrushed and long (long for boys, not for girls, like, just below the shoulder). 

They are associated with the use of alcohol and drugs, particularly beer, cocaine and marijuana, being violent or trashing parties/spoiling people's parties or events. Skaters are almost always chased by the police because they view skateboarding negatively, and in this film these are all evident.

However, this is the portrayal of the skater subculture in the 1970s which means that this is not necessarily how skaters are today because there are a lot of skaters with short-ish hair.
